Sanjukta Barooah Sattriya Nritya Dancer Profile

Great great grand daughter of first tea planter, entrepreneur, prime minister of the Ahom kingdom and freedom fighter of erstwhile Assam Maniram Dewan, Sanjukta Barooah is a well known Sattriya dancer who hails from Assam. She was born in a place where teaching dance to women was a social taboo. It was the bhokots (hermits) at the satras (hermitage) in Majuli, who had propagated this great tradition of Sattriya dance. Only recently, women dancers have been allowed to be imparted with trainings; so that they can exhibit on stage this unique living dance tradition. Sanjukta had started learning this dance-form from the year 1999, even before it was recognized as a classical dance-form of India by the Sangeet Natak Academy. She learned the basic nuances of this dance form at the Sangeet Natak Academy award winner Guru Indira P. P. Bora's school Kalabhumi in Assam. After an incessant training for atleast 9 years at Kalabhumi till 2008, Sanjukta moved to Uttar Kamalabari Sattra where she got the opportunity to fine tune herself from learned danseur Bhabananda Barbayan till 2013. At present, she is imparted with the advanced form of the dance by none other than Padmashri Jatin Goswami.

Aiming at establishing this 500 years old living tradition of Sattriya at the world durbar, Sanjukta took to become a full time professional dancer. After graduating from the University of Greenwich, UK in Media & Society in 2004, she completed her Post Graduation in Film and Television: Theory Culture and Industry from the University Of Westminster, UK in 2005. She started off her career as a trainee reporter at the India Today Group in 2006. She then worked at the Foreign Press Association in the UK in 2007. She had also worked as a television producer at the ANI from 2008 till 2009.

Her Ranga Pravesha (Sattriya Dance Graduation Ceremony) was held on 27th March 2011 at the India International Centre, New Delhi. This was the first Ranga Pravesha that the capital had witnessed. She is the first established Sattriya Nritya dancer in Delhi. Since then, she has been performing in many prestigious stages including Rabindra Bhavan-Guwahati, Dibrugarh University-Dibrugarh, Sanskriti Kendra Museums-Gurgaon, Epicentre, Gurgaon, and Samannay Sanskriti Samaroh, Uttar Kamalabari Sattra, in Majuli. The Majuli dance performance was only recently on March 29, 2013 followed by a scintillating performance of her at the India International Centre Annexe on May 19, 2013.

Sattriya dance is a passion for Sanjukta which she believes emanates from her soul. She believes she has miles to go in this wide and exuberant dance-form and with perseverance she will keep on learning Sattriya to fathom into new depths and challenges.
